At a high level, what is FPV, what do you need to get started, how do you set all of this up, etc.

I'm interested in what fpv gear you end up using. I've researched the heck out of the subject.
I'm starting with the Bixler (easy star clone), turnigy 9x with custom firmware.
Fpv specs are yet to be determined. I've read a lot of good reviews about LawMate for tx/rx. Not sure about camera though. Go Pro would be nice but pricey. I'll go inexpensive on the camera initially.
AP will be ArduPilot. But that will come later.

I'd love to learn from your experiences. Thanks for watching!

Interesting. I just ordered a Bixler last night. The 9x was Backordered, so I'm waiting to get it as well. Trent, is there any way to setup part of your forum for updates from others? Or maybe dedicate a thread to anyone who is trying to follow in your footsteps (or walk it at the same time, like us?). I'd love to see how others adapt their setups.

That is a great idea... let me think of how to implement it on the forum... and ideas?

Just use your nova first
On FPV it's all about antenna and electric problems.
A noob will start with a Chineese 1.2G/1.3G security camera wireless set with stock rubberduc antenna. Add a cheap boardcam sony ccd 1/3 420tvl. Then the fun starts
How to get more distance ? Try a panel antenna Create your own dipole antenna (inverted-vee) on the plane
Talk about antenna calculations or SWR readings. How to create a LC filter to get the stripes out of your image.
cooling inside your plane (hole's)
There is so much to talk about FPV
The top setup for FPV is now (my opinion) Radio LSR UHF 433 mhz Video 1.2G/1.3G or 2.4G
good luck with it Trent

Just thinking here: these are all video sources, "broadcasted" as analog video through VHF/UHF transmitters, right ? Why not transcode the video on board as streamingvideo (data) and push this through 3G cellular data path ? ... this way you could fly your plane across 1000+ miles as long as your plane has cell-range :-) A medium sized image at 15fps could be done <300kbps this also gives you a data path to include flight statistics like speed, alt, gps, heading ... but I'm just a noob here :-) and working in IT/Broadcast makes me think in funny ways.
