Talking to yourself? The question of long range use of a UAV/Drone/RC aircraft is currently being discussed by the FAA. For the time being, the *safe* (meaning you won't get in the newspaper and have the FBI/FAA/etc come see you) way to fly is line of site with a copilot. The AMA guidelines are the standard for RC behavior at this time. The AMA has some guidelines for FPV operation HERE - but I bet you won't like them. I understand the freedom aspect and nobody wants 'Big Brother' telling them what to do but, in the case where someone is flying an aircraft remotely over populated areas, safety has to be first. The news media is just waiting to sensationalize a lone experimenter who has a mishap. The distances you are thinking about, 2 miles, is not a good idea at this time. If you live somewhere, 30 miles from the nearest town, and have wide open spaces you might have more chances to experiment. If you live in a populated area, keep the model in site with a copilot. Now to the technical aspects of your question.. there are a few frequencies available to the hobby flyer (more if you have a ham radio license). These are in the ISM bands (Industrial, Scientific, Medical). There are also power limits to these bands. Transmit power is what gets you range (unless you are using some kind of cell phone bases system - different topic). Check out the videos of US based flyers. They usually post their gear along with their videos or it is on their webpages. I plan to eventually FPV my quadrotor mainly for science projects and afundraiser for school events.

Also how do become a ama member AMA membership is easy to do. Their website has a join/renew link. www.modelaircraft.org/For you, if you are under 19, membership can be free (see the website for details). There is a family plan too and with a paid membership, your family would get Model Aviation magazine included.
